The Bakonzo
Village Experience
The Rwenzori is not just a landscape of ice and rock. It is the ancestral home of the Bakonzo people. Walk with those who have lived in its shadow for centuries.
Beyond the Hiking Trail
At Rwenzori Hantravel Safaris, we take you deeper. Experience the daily life, the ingenious innovations, and the deep traditions of the Ruboni Community near the Mihunga Gate.
Ruboni Arts Village
A center of creativity and youth empowerment located right on the roadside towards Mihunga Gate.
“Where tradition meets engineering.”
The “Talking Arts”
Unique to Ruboni. Kinetic art installations and power demos driven by water and waste turbines engineered by local youth.
Iron Smelting
Witness the traditional skill of forging metal. We demonstrate how tools were made long before modern factories reached the valley.
The Children’s Band
Be welcomed by the energy of the village youth performing with instruments made purely from local materials.
Taste of the Mountains
You haven’t been to Kasese until you’ve eaten Sombe. Forget the hotel buffet. Join the women of the village in a traditional kitchen to prepare a real Bakonzo meal.
Sombe (Cassava leaves & fish) and Kalo (Millet bread).
Use the ekinju (mortar) to pound leaves and “mingle” the millet flour.
Communal dining. Heavy, nutritious food designed for the mountains.
Legends of the Ice Kings
Ruboni Village Walk
A guided gentle hike through community trails, passing homesteads and gardens, framed by the peaks.
Oral History
Legends of Kitasamba and sacred snows.
The Scenery
River valleys and lower peaks.
Rhythm of the Rwenzori
The Bakonzo culture is expressed loudly and proudly through dance. We finish the tour with a performance of the traditional Ekikibi.
The Ekikibi Dance
“A high-energy, flirtatious dance where men and women bump chests to the rhythm of the drums.”
