The Wilderness Route

BUKURUNGU

“Where the forest breathes and the mountains dream.”

UNTOUCHED.
PRISTINE.
WILD.

This is not the tourist trail. The Bukurungu Trail offers a direct throwback to the days of early exploration. Sleep under canvas for the first four nights, beside glacial lakes that mirror the jagged peaks above.

It provides a route of absolute solitude, delivering a steeper but highly scenic acclimatization profile before you join the Central Circuit for the technical summit push.

The Open Ridge

Omukorukumi to Kughuli Camp

Leave the valley floor behind immediately. Ascend steeply onto the ridge line, unlocking instant panoramic views of the portal peaks. Unlike the muddy valley floors, this trail stays drier and windier, providing an early taste of the alpine zone.

The Heather Forest

Kughuli to Kinyaminghe

Enter the surreal zone of Giant Heather trees draped in lichen. Loop directly beneath the dramatic Portal Peaks. Keep silent, and you may hear chimpanzees echoing from the lower valleys as the air grows thinner, crisp, and clean.
