Choose Your Travel Style

Planning a trek to the Mountains of the Moon is an exciting process. Once you decide to conquer this beautiful Ugandan range, one of the biggest choices you must make is how you want to travel. Should you hike by yourself, or should you join a group of other adventurers?

Both options offer incredible ways to experience the towering peaks and alien-like plants of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. To help you choose the best adventure for your travel style, let us compare the costs, the fun factor, and the overall experience.

Breaking Down the Costs

Cost is often the deciding factor for many travelers.

Group Climbs

Trekking with a group is much more budget-friendly. When you join a scheduled climb, you share the major logistical expenses. The cost of transport to the base camp, food supplies, and the wages for the cooks and guides are split among all the members.

Solo Trekking

Hiking alone is naturally more expensive. Because you do not have other trekkers to split the bill, you cover the entire cost of the support crew yourself. However, you are paying a premium for an exclusive, highly personalized service where everything revolves around your schedule.

The Fun & Social Experience

What is your definition of fun on the trail?

Group Climbs: A group setting brings a wonderful sense of camaraderie. You get the chance to meet like-minded nature lovers from around the world. You will share stories over hot meals at camp, play card games in the evening, and cheer each other on during the tough, steep sections of the trail. The shared struggle and triumph make for great memories.

Solo Trekking: A solo trek offers a completely different kind of joy. It provides deep silence and an uninterrupted connection with nature. If you are an introvert or someone seeking a peaceful escape from busy city life, this is the perfect option. You can listen closely to the calls of wild chimpanzees or photograph a three-horned chameleon without any background chatter.

Flexibility & Hiking Pace

The way you move through the mountains changes dramatically depending on your choice.

Solo Trekking: A private trek gives you total control over the itinerary. If you want to stop for an hour to photograph the giant lobelias, you can do exactly that. You set the daily hiking pace entirely based on your own fitness and energy levels.

Group Climbs: Group dynamics require compromise. The lead guide will set a steady, manageable pace that works for the entire team. You must stick to the group schedule to ensure everyone reaches the next camp before dark. This means you might have less time to linger at specific scenic viewpoints.

Safety and Support on the Trail

It is important to note that the Uganda Wildlife Authority requires all trekkers to hike with certified local guides. A “solo” trek actually means you are hiking with your own private guide and porters, not wandering the wilderness completely alone.

Both options are extremely safe. Group climbs provide extra moral support and a larger crew, which can be comforting. On a solo trek, your guide focuses one hundred percent of their attention on your personal health, acclimatization, and safety.
