Ruboni Arts Village
How Artisans Turn Waste into Wealth
When travelers seek authentic cultural experiences, they often look for communities that preserve their heritage while innovating for the future. In the rolling foothills of Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains, you will find exactly that.
Support the Village
A Grassroots Movement for Change
Founded in 2020 by local performing artists and craftsmen, Ruboni Arts Village began as a community initiative to support disadvantaged youth. The village provides a safe sanctuary for children in the Kasese region to learn valuable skills.
Instead of facing unemployment, these young people receive training in arts, crafts, and eco-tourism. The founders recognized a dual crisis in their community: a lack of youth opportunities and the growing threat of plastic pollution on the mountain trails. By combining these challenges, they created an innovative solution that empowers the next generation of eco-entrepreneurs.
The Waste-to-Wealth Transformation
Collection
Children and youth collect discarded plastic bottles and environmental waste from the surrounding mountain areas.
Creation
Artisans craft stunning musical instruments, sculptures, woven baskets, and colourful fibre artworks entirely from recycled plastics, wood and other materials.
Education
When tourists buy these handcrafted souvenirs, the proceeds directly fund school fees and basic necessities for the village.
Experience the Authentic Rwenzoris
Your trek to the Rwenzori peaks or your lowland wildlife safari is incomplete without a visit to this transformative community. Watching a live performance by the children of Ruboni is an enchanting experience. Their joy and resilience reflect the true spirit of the region.
At Rwenzori Hantravel Safaris, we proudly integrate authentic community visits into our mountain itineraries. We believe in supporting local youth initiatives that protect our environment and uplift the Bakonzo people.
