TURACO

Close up of a vibrantly colored bird representing the Turaco

The Rwenzori Turaco (Gallirex johnstoni), is a visually striking bird strictly endemic to the Albertine Rift. They form one of the most highly sought-after sightings for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts navigating the majestic Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda. They are classified within the Musophagidae family, a unique group of medium-sized arboreal birds found exclusively in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Visually, its body is draped in a velvety emerald-green and purplish-blue plumage. This exceptional green coloration derives from turacoverdin, a rare copper-based pigment found uniquely within the turaco family. When taking flight, the bird reveals brilliant crimson-red primary flight feathers, which are colored by a separate and equally rare pigment known as turacin. Both males and females look physically identical, sporting a prominent black crest and a vivid red ring of bare skin encircling their eyes.

These elusive birds are strictly confined to the dense montane and bamboo forests of the Rwenzori range, thriving exclusively at high elevations between 2,000 and 3,600 meters above sea level. They are entirely non-migratory, living their entire lives within these specific ecological zones without venturing to the lower plains.

Frugivorous by nature, their diet consists of over 90 percent fruit. They actively forage in the upper forest canopy for wild figs, berries, tender leaf buds, and occasionally small insects. By consuming such large volumes of fruit, Rwenzori Turacos play a vital ecological role as seed dispersers, aiding in the constant regeneration of the montane forests. They typically travel in pairs or small family groups, communicating through the mist with a loud, resonant, barking “kow-kow-kow” call that echoes across the valleys.

Rather than flying long distances, they are remarkably agile climbers. They utilize their strong, reversible outer toes to securely grip branches and run swiftly through the canopy.
