Expedition Overview
The Bukurungu Trail is an extraordinary, off-the-beaten-path alternative to the central circuit. Known for its wild nature and pristine wilderness camping, this route offers some of the most spectacular views of the alpine lakes within the Rwenzori range.
Starting from the park gate, you will hike through remote montane rainforests, passing Lake Mughuli, before merging with the main trail to tackle the Stanley glaciers. It is an ideal adventure for nature lovers who want to escape the crowds while still achieving the ultimate goal: summiting Margherita Peak.

Daily Itinerary
Basecamp to Kasanzi Camp
Start from the Rwenzori gate, trekking through pristine montane forests. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys and Rwenzori Turacos as you ascend to Kasanzi Camp.
Kasanzi to Kambeho Camp
Trek into the heather zone. The trail becomes steeper, passing beautiful streams and moss-draped trees before arriving at Kambeho.
Kambeho to Lake Mughuli
Navigate past giant lobelias and groundsels. Arrive at the stunning Lake Mughuli, surrounded by rugged peaks, offering some of the best wilderness camping in the range.
Lake Mughuli to Bukurungu Camp
A relatively shorter acclimatization day. Cross several bogs and enjoy views of Mount Gessi and Mount Emin before reaching Bukurungu Camp.
Bukurungu to Irene Lakes Camp
A steep, rocky ascent takes you out of the bogs and into the glacial moraine zone. Arrive at Irene Lakes Camp, your freezing, high-altitude basecamp for the summit.
Summit Margherita Peak
Wake at 2:00 AM. Rope up and traverse the Stanley Plateau glaciers to summit Margherita Peak (5,109m). After celebrating, descend past Elena Hut down to Bigo Camp.
Bigo Camp to Basecamp Departure
A long, scenic descent through the Bigo Bogs and bamboo forests. Pass through John Matte and Nyabitaba before finally reaching the basecamp gate.
