Expedition Overview
The 7-Day Margherita Peak Expedition is the flagship route of Rwenzori Hantravel Safaris. Sitting at 5,109 meters above sea level, Margherita Peak is the highest point of Mount Stanley and the third-highest peak in all of Africa.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, this is a true mountaineering challenge. Guided by our UMGA-certified local Bakonzo experts, you will navigate through five incredibly biodiverse ecological zones before donning crampons and ropes to traverse the Stanley Plateau glaciers to reach the summit.

Daily Itinerary
Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
Begin your ascent from the basecamp through thick equatorial rainforest, listening for Rwenzori Turacos and Blue Monkeys. The steady climb ends at Nyabitaba Hut.
Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
Cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the Mubuku River. Navigate steep, rocky sections through the bamboo forest to reach John Matte Hut.
John Matte to Bujuku Hut
Cross the infamous Bigo Bogs. Navigate boardwalks through surreal giant lobelias to reach Lake Bujuku beneath Mount Stanley.
Bujuku to Elena Glacial Camp
Tackle a steep ascent through the Groundsel Gully over rocky, freezing terrain to Elena Hut, your icy basecamp for the summit.
Summit Margherita Peak
Wake at 2:00 AM. Rope up and don crampons to cross the Stanley Plateau. Summit Africa's 3rd highest peak at sunrise, then descend to Kitandara.
Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
Climb out over Freshfield Pass. Navigate steep rocky trails and walk through beautiful alpine meadows to Guy Yeoman.
Guy Yeoman to Basecamp Departure
A long descent combining two days into one. Navigate past Kichuchu, through the bamboo zone, and past Nyabitaba straight down to the gate.
