6-Day Central Circuit Trek
Navigate the historic original Rwenzori loop. Discover spectacular views, alpine lakes, and diverse vegetation zones without the need for technical ice climbing gear.
Expedition Overview
The Central Circuit is the definitive, historic loop through the Rwenzori Mountains. It offers an incredible opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of the “Mountains of the Moon” without the physical demands of high-altitude technical climbing.
This carefully paced trek takes you through five distinct ecological zones, from dense tropical rainforests and bamboo groves to the surreal, high-altitude alpine zones filled with giant lobelias and groundsels. You will bypass the high glaciers, crossing instead over the dramatic Scott Elliot and Freshfield mountain passes.

Daily Itinerary
Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
After a briefing at the UWA gate, begin your ascent from the basecamp through thick equatorial rainforest. Listen for Rwenzori Turacos and watch out for Blue Monkeys. The steady climb ends at Nyabitaba Hut.
Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
Cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the Mubuku River. Navigate steep, rocky sections through the dense bamboo forest until you emerge into the heather zone, arriving at John Matte Hut where the high peaks first become visible.
John Matte to Bujuku Hut
Today involves crossing the infamous Bigo Bogs. You will jump across tussocks and navigate boardwalks through surreal giant lobelias. The trail continues to the beautiful Lake Bujuku, sitting in a deep, glacier-carved valley beneath Mount Stanley.
Bujuku to Kitandara via Scott Elliot Pass
Leaving Bujuku, you face a steep, challenging climb to the highest point of this trek: Scott Elliot Pass (4,372m). The views of the Margherita glaciers and Mount Baker are spectacular. After taking in the views, you descend to the stunning twin lakes of Kitandara.
Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
A sharp climb out of the Kitandara lakes takes you over Freshfield Pass. From here, the long descent begins. You will pass historical rock shelters, navigate steep rocky trails, and walk through beautiful alpine meadows filled with colorful mosses before reaching Guy Yeoman Hut.
Guy Yeoman to Basecamp Departure
The final day requires a long descent. You will navigate tricky, muddy trails past Kichuchu and through the bamboo zone, eventually crossing the river again to arrive at Nyabitaba Hut for lunch. Continue down through the lush rainforest to the basecamp to complete your expedition.
