The name “everlasting” perfectly describes their unique botanical structure. Unlike typical alpine wildflowers that wilt quickly after blooming, their petals are incredibly stiff and dry to the touch. This papery texture is a brilliant evolutionary defense mechanism designed to withstand the brutal climate of the Mountains of the Moon. By lacking excess moisture in their delicate petals, the flowers completely prevent the cellular freezing damage that would normally destroy them when temperatures plummet below zero every night.
Beyond their papery blooms, the entire plant is a masterclass in high-altitude survival. The thick, grey-green leaves are densely covered in fine, silvery hairs. These hairs serve a vital dual purpose. First, they act exactly like a thermal blanket to trap a tiny layer of insulating air tightly around the leaf. Second, they act as a highly reflective mirror to bounce back the intense, damaging ultraviolet radiation that bombards the mountain during the brief hours of clear daytime sunshine.
They frequently grow in dense, sprawling shrubs directly alongside the towering Giant Lobelias and Giant Groundsels, creating the otherworldly, prehistoric landscape that defines a true Rwenzori expedition. Because they retain their vibrant color and perfect shape long after the individual flower dies, whole mountain valleys can appear to be in perpetual, silvery-yellow bloom regardless of the harsh, unforgiving weather conditions overhead.
